Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure in which a thin, lighted camera (hysteroscope) is gently inserted into the uterus to examine the uterine cavity. At EVA IVF Women’s Centre, hysteroscopy plays a vital role in both diagnosing and treating uterine conditions that may impact fertility.
By offering a clear view of the uterus, hysteroscopy helps detect abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, and adhesions, and in many cases, these can be treated during the same procedure. This not only saves time but also enhances the chances of conception naturally or through assisted fertility treatments.
When is Hysteroscopy Needed?
Doctors at EVA IVF Women’s Centre may recommend hysteroscopy in the following situations:
-
Unexplained uterine bleeding – To identify causes of heavy, irregular, or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
-
Recurrent pregnancy loss or infertility – To detect and manage uterine abnormalities like fibroids, polyps, or scar tissue.
-
Suspected structural issues – To directly inspect the uterine cavity for congenital or acquired abnormalities.
-
IUD-related issues – To confirm placement, retrieve, or remove an intrauterine device if its position is uncertain.
-
Pre-IVF assessment – To ensure the uterine cavity is healthy and ready for embryo implantation.
How the Procedure Works
Hysteroscopy can be diagnostic (to observe) or operative (to treat). It is usually performed as a daycare procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. Here’s what you can expect:
-
Preparation
-
You’ll be comfortably positioned, and the cervix is gently prepared.
-
A speculum is inserted, and the area is cleaned.
-
-
Insertion of the Hysteroscope
-
A thin, lighted hysteroscope is carefully guided through the cervix into the uterus.
-
-
Expanding the Uterus
-
A gentle flow of sterile fluid or gas is used to expand the uterus for clear visibility.
-
-
Examination & Treatment
-
The doctor examines the uterine cavity in detail.
-
If issues like fibroids, adhesions, or polyps are found, they can be treated immediately with specialised instruments.
-
-
Completion
-
The hysteroscope is removed, and most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours.
-
The procedure usually takes 10–30 minutes, depending on whether it is diagnostic or therapeutic.
