Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a medical procedure that screens embryos for genetic disorders before implantation. PGD has been replaced by preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which is an umbrella term that encompasses all types of genetic testing on embryos. PGT can be used to detect chromosomal abnormalities, single-gene disorders, and mitochondrial DNA mutations. PGT can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy and reduce the risk of passing on genetic disorders to offspring.
