What is Assisted Reproductive Technology?

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a bunch of medical methods to help people who are having trouble having babies. These methods assist in making a baby by working around the problems that might be stopping a natural conception. It involves handling eggs, sperm, or embryos outside the body.

Many couples facing infertility have used ART to fulfill their dream of having children. However, it’s important to know that success rates can be different for each person, and there’s no guarantee that everyone trying these methods will end up getting pregnant.

Types of Assisted Reproductive Technology:

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a set of methods to help people or couples have babies. Some common ways include:
This is a well-known method where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body in a lab dish. The fertilized embryo is then placed in the uterus
In this method, a single sperm is directly put into an egg to help with fertilization, often used when there are issues with male fertility.
Eggs and sperm are mixed and placed directly into a woman’s fallopian tubes for fertilization inside her body.
Similar to GIFT, this involves fertilizing the egg in the lab and then putting the fertilized zygote into the fallopian tubes.
Sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation, useful when there areissues with sperm movement or when the cause of infertility is unknown.
A woman carries and gives birth to a child for another person or couple.
When one partner has fertility issues, eggs or sperm from a donor can be used for pregnancy, usually through artificial insemination or IVF.
Testing embryos for genetic issues before placing them in the uterus helps identify healthy ones and reduces the risk of certain conditions.
Freezing and storing eggs, sperm, or embryos for later use, often done to preserve fertility for those undergoing medical treatments affecting reproductive abilities.

Should You Use Assisted Reproductive Technologies?

Deciding whether to use Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a personal choice. It depends on things like your health, feelings, and beliefs. Before deciding, it’s smart to talk to fertility experts, learn about the risks and benefits, and understand all your options. Getting emotional support and counseling can also help you make the best decision for you. Remember, everyone’s situation is different, and the choice to use ART is a very personal one.

At Eva IVF & Women’s Centre we use IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies to help couples who cannot normally get pregnant, to become pregnant.
