What is an Ovarian Cyst?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms on or within an ovary. They are quite common and are often a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Most cysts are harmless and require no treatment. These are called functional, and they regress in the next menstrual cycle.

There are different types of ovarian cysts, and they can be classified into two main categories:

  • Functional cysts:

These are the most common type and are related to the menstrual cycle. There are two subtypes:

  1. Follicular cysts: They form when an egg follicle does not release an egg during ovulation, causing the follicle to become a cyst.
  2. Corpus luteum cysts: These form after the follicle releases the egg and transforms into a corpus luteum structure.

 

  • Pathological cysts:

These cysts are less common and are usually unrelated to the menstrual cycle. They include:

  1. Dermoid cysts: Develop from cells that produce human eggs and can contain tissues like hair, skin, or even teeth.
  2. Endometriomas: Form when endometrial tissue grows within the ovaries.
  3. Cystadenomas: Develop from ovarian tissue and are filled with watery or mucous-like material.

Laparoscopy Treatment for Ovarian Cysts:

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that is commonly used for the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cysts. It is a minimally invasive technique that involves making small incisions in the abdomen through which a thin, lighted tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted. 

Here is how laparoscopy is used in the treatment of ovarian cysts:

  • Diagnosis:
Laparoscopy is often used to confirm the presence, size, time and type of ovarian cysts.
  • Cystectomy:
If the cyst is determined to be noncancerous the surgeon may perform a cystectomy.
  • Oophorectomy:
In some cases, if the cyst is large, suspicious for cancer, or if there are multiple cysts, the surgeon may recommend removing the entire ovary (oophorectomy).
  • Draining the cyst:
If the cyst is filled with fluid and can be easily drained, the surgeon may choose to drain it during the laparoscopy.
  • Biopsy:
If there are concerns about the cyst being cancerous, the surgeon may take a tissue sample (biopsy) during the laparoscopy for further examination.

The incisions made during laparoscopy are small, creating smaller scars compared to the larger incisions made in traditional open surgery.
  • Lower risk of infection:
Because laparoscopy involves smaller cuts and less exposure of internal organs to the external environment, there is a lower risk of infection than when compared to open surgery.
  • Improved visualization:
The laparoscope provides a high-resolution, magnified view of the internal organs, allowing the surgeon to see details more clearly.
  • Preservation of ovarian function:
Laparoscopy allows for more precise removal of cysts while preserving healthy ovarian tissue.
